Age Connects is committed to supporting older people who are vulnerable, lonely and isolated. The unprecedented actions to halt the spread of Coronavirus places more challenges on older people living alone and over the age of 70.
We already have 1000 people who access our Community Services for support and the impact of self-isolation means we are experiencing significant increases in requests for help.
Whilst we have had to suspend our face to face befriending service, we have been contacting all our clients to ensure they are safe and well and to find out who would welcome regular contact or other support.

Our volunteers will continue to support our clients that need shopping, but we are reviewing on a case by case basis, to reduce the frequency to enable our volunteers to support more clients and to comply with the guidance to reduce all none essential travel.
We have drafted in more staff to support the growing number of new referrals we are receiving daily and to complete our call backs to existing clients. We would ask people to be patient when calling us as we are dealing with high demand. Please do leave a message and we will get back to you.
We are having to assess all new referrals for shopping and prescription collections. All suppliers of food, pharmacies are experiencing high demand including home deliveries. We are trying to keep pace with the changing local situation and news updates, to ensure we are helping as many people as possible.
Staff and volunteers who are out in the community are all working within Government guidelines respecting the safe distance between themselves and others and with the clients.
As much as staff and volunteers would love to take the shopping in and spend some time with the client this is not permitted but our office based staff will keep in touch with those that really want someone to talk to from time to time.
We have had many offers of help from members of the public who also want to volunteer to support older people in the community. Staff responsible for the safe recruitment are working through these offers of help as quickly as possible but we do still need to have processes in place to safeguard the wellbeing of older people.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and volunteers for their dedication and support. Please all keep safe and keep well.
