Please be advised that, after many years of dedicated service to older people in the community, the Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale Advocacy Services in Cardiff and the Vale will be closing on the 31st March 2025. Consequently, the Service is no longer accepting referrals. Anyone looking for support is advised to contact the Cardiff and Vale Advocacy Gateway on 0808 801 0577.
This closure of our Advocacy Service is due to the end of funding, and Age Connects would like to share and reflect on the positive impact this service has made.
Throughout many years of operation, the Age Connects Advocacy Service has been privileged to support and advocate for the rights and well-being of countless older individuals. The dedicated team has worked tirelessly to provide essential guidance, support, and advocacy, ensuring that the voices of our older people are heard and respected.
The Advocacy Service was established almost 30 years ago, initially providing support to individuals living in the community. In 1999, the first care home advocacy project was piloted, which subsequently grew into the comprehensive service we have today.
Since its inception, the Care Home Advocacy Service has supported hundreds of individuals living in care homes throughout Cardiff and the Vale. The committed advocates regularly visited these homes, building relationships with each resident and assisting them with personal issues. They also support residents in raising concerns about the quality of care they receive, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are upheld.
The Age Connects Community Advocacy efforts have been equally impactful. Advocates have worked determinedly to improve the lives of older people by providing personalised support and guidance. They have helped individuals navigate complex healthcare systems, access essential services, and connect with local resources. This has led to enhanced well-being, greater independence, and a stronger sense of community among older adults. They have collaborated closely with social services to address immediate needs and develop long-term care plans, ensuring comprehensive support for older adults.
Through these efforts, they have facilitated better access to essential services, enhanced resident satisfaction, and fostered a more inclusive and supportive environment.
Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale CEO Maxine Johnson says “Our advocacy has led to increased community engagement and improved health outcomes, demonstrating the vital role of advocacy in promoting the well-being and dignity of older adults.
We are immensely proud of the work we have accomplished and the difference we have made in the lives of so many. Our success would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our fantastic team, community, partners, and volunteers. We extend our deepest gratitude to all who have been a part of our journey.
As we close this chapter, we celebrate the achievements and memories we have created together. We remain hopeful for the future of advocacy in our community and encourage everyone to continue supporting and championing the rights of older people”.
